Hacksaw: Ooh Belgium. I’ve long thought of this as a potential dark horse riser. But watching it on the screen in the PFC, It’s coming across as a hotel bar band who’ve lucked into a big moment but are trying to be too cool now they have the opportunity. Added to the they’re attempting to use a vocoder, which as well as causing them difficulties, will have the usual nay sayers bleating “but they can’t use instruments/voice changers!” Clearly not as good as they think they are – I thought the 30 something disco mums of Europe might like this, but it’s coming over as contrived and insincere. But apart from that, it’s OK I s’pose … 😉
Nick: Good lord, I feel young again. I’ve been transported back to 1977 with the song, and forward to 2012 with the London Olympic logo flying all over the backdrop, and in the middle of it all there’s a man using a vocoder and sounding almost exactly like a 2006 vintage Cyberman. And it’s got wakka-wakka guitar thingies and … d’ye know, this has got all the ingredients to get noticed all the way into the final, or possibly to do nothing at all … It stands out and will be remembered though – mark my words! I think I’m in love …
