LATVIA – Bur Man Laimi – Tantumeitas
Dammit, I’ve not prewritten this one! Alexia, I don’t suppose you’d be willing to… no? Ah, heck.
Now, a few years ago (and by “a few”, I obviously mean “twenty-five” because time’s been doing that time thing to me again), I was particularly fond of Croatian finals. One of my favourite recurring artists of the day were the girls of the Putokazi choir, lovely wispy little pixie elves who kept popping up unexpectedly to bounce around the Crystal Ballroom for three minutes harmonising beautifully to various delightfully wispy pieces of complete nonsense.
They didn’t win Dora doing that. They just SHOULD have done. There’s always a place for something wispy and harmonic at Eurovision, whether it be Neiokoso making the mistake of bringing a man with them in 2004, Christine Guldbrandsen being slightly too tangible in 2006 or Vesna, again, just not quite being wispy enough in 2023.
In this tradition, Tantumeitas from Latvia are coming to Basel and planning on being very wispy indeed. It’s all delightfully ethereal and fae and… and… wispy.
Have I mentioned that it’s wispy?
Basically, it’s wispy, and it is extremely well-executed wisp. It remains to be seen whether the drunks of Thursday night Europe will say “You know what, I came here for smut and a disco dead dog, but I’m absolutely sticking around for the wispy!”. But it clearly does positively stand out from its surroundings.
Albeit wispily.
