Systur – Með Hækkandi Sól
This is the sound I suspect Estonian STEFAN was going for, but done properly.
There’s a real ‘Calm after the storm’ vibe about this gentle, unassuming reading. It’s being performed in Icelandic – and good for them – but I can’t help think in English, this would be a true contender.
Musically, it stands out as different from the sad girls and boys lining up to put a downer on Europe’s Saturday night, and the trio have huge stage presence – not to mention Sigga, Beta and Elín sing like angels. For me, there’s a Sean Colvin feel going on – and that’s no bad thing.
There’s nothing in the way of pretension here – you could easily imagine the sisters would shun any limelight nonsense and spend their Eurovision money on a new greenhouse and a canteen of cutlery.
