Survivor – Parg

I mentioned yesterday that I often find Albanian entries to be hard work and have been pleasantly surprised this year. Armenian ones have a much better hit rate, Jako ended up being very close to my favourite last year, but when they clunk, oh my word they clunk.

Survivor, I’m sorry to say, clunks. In the first instance it clunks lyrically. “I’m a survivor, stay-aliver”. No.

If you don’t like that rhyme, he can also offer you fighter, tied up and remind you. Not to my ear really better in the standard sense of “more good”.

So as a song, I think it clunks. But is Parg at least squeezing every last drop out of it?

Also no.

If this gets to the point where music industry experts are assessing performance and vocal ability, they’re going to find plenty of reasons why they’re not seeing the largest amount of it here when there are plenty of more appealing options winking at them elsewhere. The national final performance was far from exceptional, for a song that isn’t on the face of it all that challenging to deliver.

Now, I do trust Armenia to get things right for the visual staging of a song. There’s a lot of work to do here though, and from an unfriendly running order position early in Semi 2 absolutely surrounded by showpiece vocals and Emmy, this might well be (ought to be?) one of the unfortunate six. CLUNK!

Nick’s score: 2
