Look, I could sit here and type a lengthy dissertation about how predictable and formulaic Sweden’s Melodifestivalen has become, but to be honest it’s been that for years. It’s one of the reasons we keep coming back to it. A quartet of brilliant presenters brought new energy into the shows this year at least, even if most of the songs were distinctly lacklustre. Even before it started, John Lundvik’s position in the running order had many calling him as this year’s winner, and if your format is that obvious, maybe it is time for a shake-up?
After finishing third last year with ‘My Turn’, John found that, ironically, his turn was to be 2019. It’s a safe song, but a big one, that pulls in a mini gospel choir to gift it an impressive lift in the final minute. It’s simply, but effectively staged, and should be another solid Top 10 for Sweden. I’d even say a win is not out of the question, in a year without a clear front runner, and with the undeniable oomph of the backing singers.
Its biggest asset is John himself, who didn’t escape my eye last year, so I’m pleased to see him back with a much better song. Of course my baser interests are also piqued with the prospects of John being such a dish. Having conducted a thorough, well, let’s call it a ‘perusal’ online, I’m informed of the existence of a partner and children. Sadly, for me this means that while I can affirmatively answer John’s question with “It’ll never be too late” it appears I’ll just have to accept that he’s Too Straight For Love.
Monty’s score; Douze Points!
