Phil’s Eurovision Countdown 2019 – Part 18 – Hungary

Joci

Joci Papai hasn’t changed a lot over the last two years and neither has his song if we are honest here at OnEurope.

You know what you are going to get with him. Ethnic? TICK. Leather jacket? TICK. This year, though, he’s decided to sing about his Daddy…. No, not in that sense, you filthy beasts, his actual father … or at least the song is sung from the point of view of a son singing about his father.

It’s rhythmically pleasing even though Magyar is one of the most impenetrable languages in this contest. It’s got a structure and it’ll have a massive stage performance if A Dal is anything to go by.

This definitely plays to the same constituencies that gave him an eighth place last time round.  Juries will lap up the well-written and musical parts, the televoters will pick up on the good song vibe. Yeah, I likes this one.

Phil’s score – 7 Points

I am sitting on the fence with this one. It’s melodic and very touching but I can’t shake the feeling that this is a bit underdeveloped. There is something missing to make the song a great one.
It will qualify but will get lost in the final because there are better song than this one
