The Countdown ends with the OnEurope home team – mostly because Ukraine dropped out.
When the songs were announced for Eurovision: You Decide, some fans sounded a note of disappointment. There was nothing that awful there (well, OK, Freaks), but nothing knock-your-socks-off great either. The best of a mediocre bunch won. Roy D Hacksaw of this parish wrote an open letter to BBC Eurovision – it went viral.
So here we are, Michael Rice with ‘Bigger than us’. I want so much to say this is going to surprise everyone, but I don’t think it will.
It’s got all the hallmarks of a Melodifestivalen reject – coming partly from the man behind this year’s Swedish song. Rice does his best, but at the UK national final, his inexperience showed and it was ad-lib city. You could see him counting in his head as he plodded through the moves drilled into him.
If the BBC can keep this simple and let him stand still and sing, it might garner votes, but I think we’ll be propping up the right hand side of the board again this year.
