Do you like your traditional song? Are you more a fan of something more contemporary? Do you like it when a country surprises you with a choice of song?
Back in 1987, our friends in Greece deviated from their usual traditional style, and tried something to wake us all up. It came from the duo Bang! (with an exclamation mark, naturally), fronted by today’s birthday boy Θάνος Καλλίρης/Thanos Kalliris. Until this point, you’d expect Eurovision entries you hear in a fancy taverna in Skiathos. But it perhaps – perhaps – signalled that Greece would win this song contest thing someday. It would take them 18 years and few misfired, but Thanos and his pal Vasillis (not forgetting Tereza, Mariana and Katerina) were trailblazers.
Thanos is 63 today.
