11 July – Her beagle is my Personal Jesus

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Every now and then a performance comes along that just sets a new bar for performances. It’s so memorable in so many ways. And these ways are not always favourable. Of course, every song – without exception (well, maybe one exception) will have its fans regardless of performance.

In Turin/Torino, we witnessed two songs in Italian. One, of course, was the home entry. The other came from today’s birthday boy Achille Lauro (né Lauro De Marinis). As we know San Marino’s record of making Grand Finals is very patchy, so it was perhaps not a surprise that he failed to make it. But he definitely tried. If you’ve not seen his unique performance, then we won’t spoil it for you here. However, he did score points, getting nearly a 50/50 split between those coming from juries and televotes. He even got one jury’s maximum. They know who they are. Achille’s staging is now legendary, and it will be a long long time before we’ll ever see something like it again.

Achille is 35 today.

Buon compleanno, Achille!
