Despite public statements from San Marino RTV suggesting uncertainty over Eurovision 2026, the country’s government has quietly – and officially – committed San Marino to next year’s contest and beyond.
A resolution published by the Congress of State on 8 July 2025 not only authorised San Marino’s participation in Eurovision 2026, it also secured the San Marino Song Contest as the selection method through 2028.
The official government resolution gives a clear mandate:
- San Marino will participate in the next three editions of Eurovision (2026, 2027, 2028).
- The selection will continue via the San Marino Song Contest, a partnership involving the State Secretariat for Tourism, San Marino RTV, and private partner Media Evolution S.r.l.
- A new three-year public-private contract will be signed for the organisation and promotion of the contest.
The Congress of State has approved a budget of €350,000 for the 2025–2026 edition to cover the running of the contest and related events. The government has also authorised sponsorship to help cover costs. A multi-year partnership contract with Media Evolution is intended to give the San Marino Song Contest long-term stability, increased reach, and sustained international exposure.
And it will prevent the annual post-Eurovision whinge about how being a microstate is the reason for sub-par results and absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the song/performer.
Why the confusion?
SMRTV director-general Roberto Sergio told Il Sole 24 recently that no final decision had been made on 2026 participation, citing concerns about voting transparency and treatment of microstates. In reality, the government resolution – dated two weeks before these statements – shows the broadcaster’s involvement and financial support are already secured. This points to a disconnect between public negotiations with the EBU and the state’s internal plans.
No, you’re blushing.
