What is it with Danish Eurovision entries? They always sound solidly professional. Someone works overtime to get the very best from both singer and song. And yet, the end result invariably bores the arse off me.
To my ears, ‘Higher Ground’ represents everything that someone somewhere thinks a Eurovision song should sound like in 2018.
The cod ethnic elements offer unintended comedy to what is otherwise a dreary stab at anthemic pop. There will be wind machines, capes and unsmiling faces – and that’s just in my front room.
The one thing it has going for it is that the Danes get to sing in the second semi-final (also known as the piss weak one), so we might get to enjoy faux Viking stomps come Saturday.
