Ukraine, and I really love this. This is one of the ones I’m most curious about. I want to see whether they can recreate the energy on stage that draws us in to the songs quickening, pulsating beats.
Wow!
This goes off! The lyrics are traditional folk song stuff, all renewal and spring and nature, but they sit incongruously with the music, which just adds to whole feeling of nonsense. The band and their presentation fuel this further with a stark performance, full of white, barren branches in which they stand to deliver the song.
There are two dancers, spinning the kind of circular ring lights around their heads that Instagrammers use to get rid of their blemishes. Lead singer Kateryna sports what looks like a black leatherique frock, adorned with a splash of colour in some green fluffy bits draped around her shoulders. She looks like a cross between a dominatrix and a gonk, but in a great way!
She delivers the sing barely flinching from a hold into the camera, adding a mysterious, and slightly sinister feel to the overall starkness. It works perfectly for the mood and I love this! Some split screen shots, in stand out diagonal cuts, add a little bit more to making this quite unique.
