23 March – Buried in the middle of the grass, he lies here

What’s your favourite type of song? Is it one that celebrates love? Or one that tells us about what we’re doing to the planet? Or something darker?

They all have a place in our favourite TV show. And back in the 1960s, today’s birthday boy Vladimir ‘Lado’ Leskovar went down the darker path with his Eurovision song. It’s proper Balkan angst and, to coin a Portuguese word, saudade. He even speaks during his song. And who doesn’t love a good trumpet solo. Lado came eighth with seven points. That doesn’t sound like much, but that was a better than average finish for old Yugoslavia. By the way, it’s in Slovene.

Lado is 78 today.
