Serviette of Doom: Eurovision 2021 – Semi-final 1

Serviette of Doom

As is tradition, the good folk of OnEurope gather (virtually) and scribble predictions on what has become known as the ‘Serviette of Doom’. Tomorrow, we indulge in merciless teasing of whoever scored the least and whisper unkindly about the one who was spot on.

With little more ado, here we go:

Mr Phil

Qualifiers: Belgium, Malta, Ukraine, Lithuania, Russia, Cyprus, Azerbaijan, Sweden, Croatia, Norway. – 9/10

Monty

Qualifiers: Lithuania, Russia, Sweden, Ireland, Cyprus, Ukraine, Malta, Norway, Croatia, Azerbaijan. – 8/10

Nick

Following the jury semifinal last night, a couple of changes here from what I said on Saturday. Romania were always going to need to ride a wave of jury love, and that now looks in serious jeopardy. I also thought my borderline choice of Croatia needed a certain level of jury support to supplement a mid-table televoting result. I don’t now see them getting it, and so I’m swapping Norway back in. The other space that opens up could go anywhere, but logically it should be one of the Balkan efforts, and I’m going to nervously say North Macedonia.

Qualifiers: Lithuania, Russia, Australia, North Macedonia, Cyprus, Norway, Belgium, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Malta. – 8/10

Mo

Qualifiers: Belgium, Malta, Ukraine, Lithuania, Russia, Cyprus, Sweden, Croatia, Azerbaijan, Norway. – 9/10

For what it’s worth………
Lithuania, Russia, North Macedonia, Cyprus, Croatia, Belgium, Ukraine, Malta, Azerbaijan and Norway
I’m not sure I 100% believe Sweden won’t qualify, but I do think it will be scrabbling for the last few places rather than rock solid as per usual, and sort of like the idea of them having to up their game a bit!

Not completely sold about Israel, Sweden or Norway and would happy if North Macedonia will go through.

I am in Ahoy, so no comments from my side, during the live show.

Have fun tonight

My list is the same as Phil’s and Mo’s. In decreasing order of likelihood (i.e. winner at the top):

Malta
Ukraine
Cyprus
Lithuania
Russia
Belgium
Azerbaijan
Norway
Sweden
Croatia

It’s a 50/50 between having Croatia and Israel in 10th place, but I picked Croatia.

Really guys?? you all ruled out Israel with those amazing whistle notes and choreography? Are you sure this is the reason?? hmmm…
Israel was amazing and deserved qualification, way much over Croatia and Ireland.
I got 9/10 – missing out Norway with Australia

It’s a song contest though, not a whistle note and choreography contest. And to my ears, ‘Set me free’ remains a dreadful song which Eden drags into acceptable territory.

Thank god Europe ruled out that opinion. ‘Dreadful’ song? How disrespectful can you be? You can say it’s not your cup of tea, but dreadful?? At least it’s an original one not like other songs…

There’s an old saying ‘opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one’ … and maybe everyone is one in their own special way. OnEurope isn’t like all the other fan sites in that we tend to speak our mind and that means we can say if we think something is dreadful. I happen to think Eden was saddled with an awful dog’s dinner of a song and her team made the best out of what she was given. That’s my opinion and no matter how many times you come back and tell me I’m an awful person (I am, actually, well-spotted), I won’t rise to further trolling.
