CZECHIA – Kiss Kiss Goodbye – Adonxs
I’ll be honest – and it’s not a fantastic start to a review – I’d completely forgotten that this entry exists. I thought I was going to be writing about Denmark today. Clearly it’s going to be Czechia, obviously it is, how could I have forgotten that?
I think I’ve discussed in the past the concept of “trying to win last year’s contest”, which can be a fast track to finishing 7th, which is generally fine. I think Adonxs (let me digress, I don’t like this weird trend of rxndxmly chxngxng vxwxls xntx x’s, xvxn xf wx’vx xstxblxshxd thxt txlxvxtxrs prxfxr cxnsxnxnts) (unless I’m supposed to be pronouncing it a-DONKS, in which case stand down) is gently trying to win last year’s contest. I can’t otherwise explain the dance break, except as a vehicle to shout at jury members “Look! Dance! Multi-talented right here!”
Vocally he’s putting a pleasant and solidly broad range of note-singing on display (“Look everyone! Note-singing! Over here!!!”), and there’s nothing wrong with it, he’s absolutely fine.
It’s the song though. It’s a vehicle, but it’s certainly not a self-driving one. It’s fine, it’s fine, but it doesn’t really grab me. At all.
Basically, this is a song so intense in its anonymity that it created a memory blank for a decently large part of central Europe and made me think I was going to be writing about Denmark.
Donks needed a better vehicle than this. I suspect he probably deserved one.
Nick’s score: 5
