FRANCE – Maman – Louane
This must be the fourth time I have written this review because of my associated illnesses, but I still come to the same conclusion.
This song does not know what it is. France2 tried to kid us all along that it was the best thing since sliced bread and to that end they even got Louane singing above the rugby at half time! I tuned in like nine million other people, and the first thing I said out loud was She’s forgotten her song. I make no apology for saying that this should be better than it is given all of the hype – generated mostly by the broadcaster – but I get the overall feeling that the song is missing a massive something.
It’s very nice and chanson and stuff, and I guess a proportion of the Saturday night audience would be prepared for that… but, like the influencers on the Internet, the audience might well spit their water out accidentally when the nine-year-old says ‘maman’ at the end of the song, because literally no one expects the Spanish Inqusition… no… sorry…. no one expects kids at this contest.
It just makes the whole experience unfulfilling, a bit like a bagel – the bit in the middle is the important bit.
Phil’s Score – 6 Points.
