Mo’s Eurovision Countdown 2019 – Portugal

I’ve read so many rave reviews of this song. I’ve been told it’s ‘art’. I’ve also read reviews that dismiss it as a pile of pretentious tuneless twaddle.

I fall firmly into the latter camp.

I’ve been told the reason I don’t understand this lies in the fact I don’t appreciate ‘Fado’. This isn’t fado. Whatever it claims to be, it’s not particularly well-performed.

I’ve yet to make it through the full three minutes and doubt I’ll do this in May either. In fan-talk, this is a ‘toilet break’ song.

I would go so far as to say this is the worst song I have heard in the contest. Ever. And I’ve been watching since 1972.

But as with anything, I defend its right to be there. Variety matters and if we all liked the same thing, Sweden would win every year.

Whats the thing with you non-Portuguese with Fado and with everything coming from our country needing to be Fado. everybody keeps labeling things fado or non fado… just cause people have eaten a pastel de nata and done a tour on one of Lisbon’s tourist trams does not mean they know anything about our country or culture. I am fine with people saying they hate the song, they dislike it or not understand it. What pisses me off is saying that something is trying to be Fado or isn’t Fado enough. Portugal has NEVER sent a Fado song to Eurovision and most likely never will. Portugal is more than Fado, and this song, wether you like it or not fits very well the current music scene of Portugal. It’s very eclectic with African influences (Kuduro), traditional Portuguese sounds and styles of singing, and modern electronic music in the process…. things can just be instead of having to be Fado….. its like saying: sorry I dont like the Irish song, she is not river dancing enough….. Again, hate the song all you want, I dont mind at all (who am I to mind) but stop summarizing our culture as only Fado…. we have moved on, and so should you.

Thats a hefty rant right there, Sadly, though, you appear not to have based it on anything Mo said – He said “I’ve been told the reason I don’t understand this lies in the fact I don’t appreciate ‘Fado’. This isn’t fado.” – I also appreciate English might not be your first language so I’m willing to give a little bit of something being “lost in translation” but from those 21 words I hardly think Mo “Summarised our Culture as only Fado”

Congrats though, rant of the year so far!

Haha What’s Eurovision without a few good rants! 😀 And true, english ain’t my mother tongue, therefore I might have misinterpreted a few words…And if I did I apologize for my rant. Let’s say there is a bit of frustration that was built up from reading on other forums or facebook about this song (which I really dont care much about) with people constantly pulling the Fado card, or the it’s not Portuguese enough card without any idea about the current Portuguese music scene. I work it out on this post and maybe should have not been so harsh…. my bad. But thanks for the Rant of the year award! hahaha! Have a great Eurovision! I’ll be rooting for the Dutch song this year…. hope he brings his clogs 😛
