I shouldn’t like this, but I do. It’s ever-so-slightly smug, the whole mockney vibe gets old fast and if they keep the spoken voice-over, it’s a gimmick too far.
But somehow ‘Friend of a friend’ pulls it off. It’s professional, polished and slick. A well-put together pop song – the kind of thing that sells. It doesn’t sound like something that can only thrive inside the Eurovision bubble (Croatia, anyone?). This alone should secure it ample jury points.
I want Lake Malawi to do well, and I certainly see their song making the final. But then all bets are off. In among the wrought ballads, this slice of summer could well fight its way to the top ten. Or it might sink without trace.
