Today, we saw a first glimmer of what Iceland will be serving up on the Eurovision stage this year.

The VÆB brothers, Iceland’s entry for 2025, had their second rehearsal this morning on the big stage in Basel. And according to early impressions, everything went smoothly. As is the new way with Eurovision, the details are kept tightly under wraps, but a few hints have started to slip through. Along with short snippets from each run through.

Yes, that Selma

Director Selma Björnsdóttir—yes, that Selma, of Icelandic Eurovision royalty—shared earlier this week that the staging will stay true to the version that won Iceland’s national selection, Söngvakeppnin. But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s just a copy-paste job. The graphics and visuals have had a significant upgrade, and there are still a few surprises tucked up the team’s sleeve.

“It’s essentially the same as what people saw at Söngvakeppnin,” Selma said, “but we’ve improved the visuals and added some enhancements.” What those enhancements are remains to be seen, but she hinted that there are “a few trump cards still to play.”

The Icelandic entry is first up in the running order for the first semi-final on Tuesday, May 13—always a tricky slot, but one that should see most people watching.

Whether VÆB’s mix of energy, visuals and Icelandic charm can make a lasting impression from the top of the show remains to be seen… but if this morning’s rehearsal is anything to go by, they’re on the right track.
