AZERBAIJAN – Run With U – Mamagama
Azerbaijan have quietly been in Eurovision for 17 years now. I reject this timeline and indeed reality in general, naturally, but the maths do tally. It’s really been two distinct phases – the “We are going to win this contest, repeatedly, and we don’t care how much it costs!” phase, followed by the “Hmm, this is actually turning out to be quite expensive isn’t it?” phase. The ensuing “We’re not paying THAT!” phase has lasted so long that I did actually think that they’d forgotten how to do it.
It’s with slight surprise, then, that I need to report that they’ve remembered how to do it.
Run With U is a simple, unassuming, absolute little cracker of a pop song, and if it’s staged with the same playfulness and creativity as the music video then I reckon it’s very much flying under the radar.
I absolutely love Asaf’s vocal stylings, I want to say he’s giving me some Michael Jackson vibes but I fear I’ve not quite alighted on the correct musical reference point. Let’s just say that it’s the 1980s in a bottle, and yet it incorporates some musical spirit of the Caucasus and still manages to feel very fresh.
This pushes all my positivity buttons, and if this is as good live as it is on video, the Azeris might just be on to something. It’s a strong return to form, and if all’s well with the world this can easily get to the final and land top half at LEAST.
