Nobody But You by Cesár Sampson
Such is the recent success of Bulgaria at Eurovision that the team behind this has been drafted into other countries too. The songwriters – members of the international collective Symphonix – have collaborated on entries for Bulgaria and Macedonia, and the singer, Cesár, provided backing vocals to both Poli Genova and Kristian Kostov to top 4 places for Bulgaria. Now going solo for his native Austria, Cesár brings a terrific song with hints of soul, R&B and gospel.
The video is eye-catching, not just for him running through the snow, but also for some innovative cuts and reflective shots, and it leapt into my list of 2018 favourites almost instantaneously. The quite lovely arrangement offers opportunity to make a focus of the backing vocals, so we might have a gospel ensemble adding to a simple, classy presentation.
The whole thing is not hampered by the fine figure Cesár himself cuts, and on that count, he too has leapt to the top of my must-have selfies list. But fear not, dear reader, I won’t just throw myself at him with disturbing abandon. Besides, he used to be a social worker, so he probably knows how to get a restraining order…
My marks: 10 points
Will it qualify? Yes
