Mo’s Eurovision 2023 Countdown: Estonia

Alika

If there’s an entry that’s been underrated by fandom in this year’s Eurovision line-up, it’s this one. Alika turned in a remarkably mature and charismatic performance, both in the national final and the promotional video – where it appears a visual cue was taken from Duncan Laurence (minus the bum shot).

The song itself is perhaps the weaker link, being somewhat understated and, dare I say, unfinished. It needs a bigger final chorus with the boost of a backing vocalist or two before falling away to its piano and violin finish – the cold stop doesn’t grab me.

But Barbara Pravi brought something of this with her and stormed to second place in recent years. I see no reason why Estonia can’t celebrate its best result in many a mediocre year.
