One of my colleagues and esteemed writing team member asked the question “ Have we all been sleeping on Moldova?” earlier this week and I couldn’t answer him because *I* had been so sleeping on it, that I forgot what it went like.
The answer, after my first listen, is “ I don’t know”. It seems to have some of the required elements of a good song – a returning performer in Natalia ( though the fact that the 4 other singers in this all look exactly like her is very weird) a bit of business with violins, but it’s less than the sum of its parts.
However, It’s more a “vibe” than a song and whilst this can be good, I’m actually undecided as to whether this is. It has potential in the first bridge to be all pitchy and horrific and the same can be said about the ending and the homage to Nicki French’s clock hand movements.
Yet it has the potential to get under Europe’s skin with the hook of the chorus. Staging-wise this has definitely got to be less is more but I fear that it’s going to score less than more points.
