Western Swing

Texas Lightning

Hey, that Texas Lightning are dead good by the way.

Solid, charming, happy-go-lucky – it’ll do alright. Every now and again I got a ‘this is going to win it’ tingle – but it was usually followed by a ‘nah, it’ll scrape top ten’ almost immediately afters.

I like it, and I’m glad it’s here.

But for those who complain that it’s an American song in a European contest – don’t be silly. Just cos they’ve got ten gallon hats on and have the odd lilt of sit-down slide guitar on it doesn’t mean that it’s not as blatant a Central European song as you could ever wish to hear. Country? Certainly not. Western Swing – of the type popularised by the brilliant Bob Wills & the Texan Playboys in the 40s and 50s – at a push. But it’s nearer to that old fave Danish shuffle pop than anything, dear-hearts.

Hey, musicology on OnEurope? Whod’ve thunk it?!!
