16 April – Love will touch your eyes so deep and blue

Eurovision occasionally attracts dynasties. That is, members of the same family all clamouring to take part in our favourite TV show. We’ve had siblings, twins and the mother-and-daughter combo in the past.

Today’s birthday Björgvin Helgi ‘Bo’ Halldórsson is an alumnus of one of the Dublin contests in the 1990s. Plenty of people are. He was there in 1995 and got himself a whole bunch of 31 points. This gave him 15th place. It was obviously a tough old contest, and the influence of three consecutive Irish wins was effecting other countries’ efforts. Lots of ballads, and a winner that had a heavy Celtic influence. Bo even got an Irish conductor on board. Anyway, following in her father’s footsteps, our Bo’s daughter Svala had a go herself. She may have thought that she could outdo her dad. It wasn’t to be.

Bó is 73 today.

Til hamingju með afmælið, Bo!
