26 January – Dreams in the hearts, which are dull and sad

Legend is a word used way too much these days. Someone can spend three minutes on a stage, sing a song in a mediocre stylee and be given the title ‘legend’. It’s usually accompanied by the line “the real winner of the contest”.

However, there are legends out there. Some of them even won our favourite TV show, like the late Lys Assia. Others are less in the public eye, but have still done there time in Eurovision. One such example is today’s birthday boy Gerhard “Gary” Lux. He was Austria’s go to guy in the 1980s and 1990s. If you look hard enough, you’ll see him appear regularly between 1983 and 1995. That’s legendary in anyone’s book. And who else could carry off the yellow shirt, grey suit and white trainers combo? The song I’ve picked is, in my humblest opinion, Gary’s finest hour. He came eighth in the best contest of them all, and scored highly off those fickle jurors in the UK of stuff.

Gary is 60 today.

Frohe Geburtstag, Gary!
