Croatia – just when you thought you’d seen everything

Roko at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest for Croatia in Tel Aviv

For the last twenty years (yes, seriously, we are that old) OnEuropeans have crawled from their Eurovision beds and thought: “Surely, surely Croatia would have realised that things shouldn’t be quite as batshit as usual.”

Then I sit at my chair in the Press Centre, watch the television and see Roko writhing on the floor with LED screens showing him starting in hell (where I wish he had stayed), and  as the song goes on, he ascends to heaven. Angel dancers gave him wings, and by the end of the song they flew up and away from the stage.

As a piece of storytelling, it was actually perfect. As a song in the 2019 contest, it just looked out of place.  However, having said that it was the first proper mental piece of stuff in this semi final.

There are going to be too many good songs in this heat for Croatia to get through, and that’s a shame for Roko because from what I heard today, he has a cracking voice and without the awful English lyric and the superfluous shite on stage, this song could have been something.

I don’t think it’s qualifying.

It’s like last year’s Icelandic entry. Lovely guy, fantastic voice, but saddled with a dirge of a song. Such a shame!
